I am very excited to start this new school year because we will be using ALEKS exclusively for all classwork, homework, tests and quizzes. The only score outside of ALEKS is the final exam. ALEKS is Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces. It is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. Students will be expected to work a minimum of 3 hours a week in ALEKS. They will take an Assessment once per week in the computer lab to determine their level of proficiency in Algebra. These Assessments will make up 10% of their final grade. This will be 2 class periods which can be up to 1 hour and 20 minutes of their ALEKS time per week. The remainder of the time in ALEKS will be on their own outside of the classroom. Their total time on ALEKS each week will make up 10% of their final grade.
The entire grading rubric is as follows:
10% - ALEKS Pie Progress
10% - ALEKS Time
10% - ALEKS Topic
10% - ALEKS Scheduled Knowledge Check
10% - Homework on ALEKS
10% - Quizzes on ALEKS
20% - Tests on ALEKS
20% - Final Exam
Since 80% of the student's grade is based on work in ALEKS, it is important for the student to be dedicated to working on ALEKS every day. I suggest that students work on ALEKS with their textbook open as a reference for learning. As the student encounters difficulty understanding concepts, I have inserted into ALEKS my PowerPoints that I use in teaching the students in the classroom. ALEKS will provide a direct link to my PowerPoints.
The Quizzes and Tests are based on exercises from ALEKS Homework.
Parents will be notified by email every Saturday as to their son's progress on ALEKS. Make sure your son knows which email address to enter into his ALEKS account to provide notification to you.
I am looking forward to having a great year!
